Understanding the practice

What is Reiki?

Universal Life Force Energy

Reiki rests on the idea that a universal life force energy permeates every living being.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a practice that supports deep relaxation, balance, and overall wellbeing. Reiki (霊気) combines the Japanese words Rei ("universal" or "spiritual") and Ki ("life energy").

Reiki originated in Japan in the early 1900s through the teachings of Mikao Usui and has since become a widely practised complementary wellbeing technique.

During a session, you remain fully clothed while light hand placements, or hands held just above the body, create a calm space to rest and unwind. The practitioner acts as a gentle channel for this universal life energy, letting it flow through to you. Rather than being directed, the energy is drawn to where it is most needed, supporting your body's own natural capacity to find balance and restore itself. Many people describe feeling deeply relaxed, peaceful, or restored afterwards.
